Digital Carpenter
About
Custom software, built for your business.

I'm Chris, the person behind Digital Carpenter. For over 25 years I've been designing and building software for Australian and International businesses. From small teams to large organisations with complex internal processes. Property, risk, compliance, operations, and internal systems that keep businesses running day to day. These are rarely flashy, marketing products, but are instead the tools people rely on to get their work done every day.
Most of my work starts in the same place: spreadsheets, emails, and workarounds that have slowly grown into something fragile. I spend time with the people doing the work, understanding how things operate, and then design software that fits the workflow. I'm good at Excel and quick to understand your business, and that helps a lot when converting unwieldy spreadsheets & processes into a usable system.
I work end-to-end. That means helping define the problem, designing the solution, building it, rolling it out, and then supporting it long after launch. I don’t disappear after delivery. I host the systems, maintain them, improve them, and make sure they continue to earn their place inside the business.
Technically, my background is broad and pragmatic. I can work with the technology your business uses, or advise you on the best platform. I enjoy using C#/.NET and PHP, but I have used many different languages to create secure, scalable systems that are built to last. I care deeply about clarity, maintainability, and correctness. Software should be understandable by the next person who has to touch it, including future-me, so I always provide documentation and training.
Digital Carpenter is intentionally small. I work directly with clients, without layers of account managers or hand-offs. You talk to the person designing the system, writing the code, and thinking about the long-term implications, and then supporting you through them.
